Abstract
Mathematical connections are a key component of meaningful mathematical learning, yet little is known about how pre-service teachers analyse them in STEM modelling contexts. This study examines how pre-service primary teachers establish, identify, and interpret mathematical connections in a population modelling task, and how this analysis informs their instructional decisions. Participants engaged in a modelling sequence including structured reflection activities. Data from written productions and instructional proposals were analysed using qualitative content analysis, complemented by exploratory quantitative analysis. Results show that participants mainly establish procedural and representational connections, while argumentative connections are less frequent. During reflection, connections are identified selectively, with representational ones overrepresented. A strong relationship is found between connections established and identified, but not with instructional strategies. These findings highlight the need to better support the recognition and didactical use of less visible mathematical connections in teacher education.
